Since the early days of the Internet, people have been used
to getting nice things for free, legally or illegally. This
kind of behavior was alright during the “pioneer”
days of the world wide web, but in our present time we must
realize that everything should, could or have a price. There’s
been a feeling of resentment among some people though. Those
people believe in the principle that if it was free once,
it should be free all the time. This is just not the case.
Since I started working with TotalChoice Hosting, the work
that goes behind a product has become more relevant to me.
I have also had the pleasure with talking with a few script
and plug-in authors of various genres and skills and I have
come to a realization. Even though some charge you to use
their services, there are still plenty of hard working folks
that get no credit at all for giving their worth for their
profession.
No mater the field online, there is somebody on the other
side of the product or page that is doing a lot of the work
you do not usually get to see. Long hours and countless
lost hours of sleep are no surprise to these people. For
one reason or another though, they enjoy what that do.
Reading through various web sites and message boards you
do run into the occasional user of these products that seem
to always be demanding even more for nothing. Then if the
author or person behind the scenes starts to charge a little
bit of money, or asks for some retribution for his work?
That person or company tends to get the cold shoulder from
the online community.
“It deserves to be free!” they will say as
they pound aggressively at their keyboards. Well to the
argument before, a wise man once said, “Nothing in
life is for free,” and a more relevant example couldn’t
be clearer. You can’t blame the society on it’s
greediness though, because as I stated above that is just
how we were brought up in our online lives. The largest
part of the online community wants to get something for
nothing, and to me this is just not right.
In my personal opinion, I believe that if you like a product
then you should pay money to use the product. That money
that you spend could help the lonely software developer
or script writer to move on to his next biggest project.
It could also help the man behind the scenes just feel a
little bit better about what he or she is doing with their
time. We’re not talking about anything large either,
a few bucks could go a long way if more people felt obligated
to give. Most of these people or web sites have links to
Paypal to make the job even easier.
So next time you download a product or install a script
or plug-in that you really enjoy, think about the person
behind that hard work. Think about giving something back
to the forgotten backbone of the open source movement.
