There are lots of blogging engines out there, but which
on is the best? The worst? The easiest? The hardest? I figured
it was about time somebody did a side by side comparison
of some of the most popular blog engines out there today.
There is no doubt that blogging has become a phenomenon
across the entire world and hopefully after reading through
this week’s column you will have a better idea of
which one to pick.
Yes it’s got a funny name, but don’t let the
name fool you. For only being a couple of well written files,
bloating of your web space will be the last thing you’ll
need to worry about when using blosxom. For being so lightweight
it has a lot of bells and whistles to keep it as a contender
among the world of online blogging. Another good thing about
it is at the time I am writing this, it’s free. The
con to this little blogger is the installation is not for
the faint of heart. It requires you to more about the inner-workings
of your web space and web server than any blogging engine
I have ever tried to install.
Pivot is another tool that’s also free and published
under the GPL. The nice thing about it is that it does not
use a MySQL backend like some other blog engines do. Everything
in Pivot is controlled by PHP and only by PHP. Now some
might note that this leads to some security concerns that
have been forgotten about but for the most part if you don’t
have any evil online enemies I do not think you have anything
at all to worry about.
To be honest with everyone here, I never really liked pMachine.
The install seems over the top hard, and the “free”
version is very limited to say the least. I know some people
who have been very happy with it, so maybe it could be the
blog engine for you. All I’m saying is I didn’t
find anything to be overly impressed with myself.
The grand-daddy of them all! This was the tool that really
brought blogging to the dance and has not disappointed me
yet. There are a plethora of people who use Movable Type
so by searching Google you can get help on almost any problem
you might run into. It’s got everything you’d
ever really need to get yourself blogging, and if it doesn’t
check out their Movable Type plug-ins page which probably
does. The only bad thing I can say about Movable Type is
with bad management it can tend to get a bit bloated on
your web hosting plan.
