Just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. Yes,
I know I’m the first person to bring this up since
you moved out of your parents’ house but it is true.
Sure there are over 100 ways you can add more on your site
for less, but if the good majority of the people can not
see it, then what is the point?
Huge graphical interfaces might seem like a good idea but
if it takes your basic users a few days to download your
site, do you think you would be staying to see it? I do
not think so.
Sure, more people are getting high speed internet everyday.
There are internet service providers upgrading their services
more and more everyday. You can never forget that the majority
of the online audience you are shooting for though are people
using 56K or lower modems on computers that are barely making
it. The world's connections are growing, but they are not
growing fast.
Why would you want to eliminate all those potential visitors?
Have no fear, ways exist to have your cake and eat it too.
The best way to keep an eye on your site's download size
is to downgrade your picture sizes. Many programs like Paint
Shop Pro allow you to convert your files to lower sizes.
Also, you should remember that for graphics and text it's
best to you the ".gif" extension. Photos of people,
places and things deserve a little better depth and quality,
so you should go with a ".jpg" extension on them.
Instead of going over the top and killing your bandwidth
usage, think of the limit as a creative boundary. Try to
find a way to design your site under a certain file size
without going over your set limit. Think of it as a new
challenge for yourself. There are so many things you can
do without going over the limit on file and download sizes.
Play with it and show it off to others. They will be shocked
and amazed by your use of so little, and being able to have
an outcome that looks so great!
Finding ways to cut your limits will also leave you more
room for more rich content instead of a flashy and confusing
interface. You might get a few shocks with a big flash banner
once or twice, but what makes people come back to a site
is content not heavyweight banners and scrolling text.
