Hey guys. Can anyone point me towards the right direction? I have a computer running Windows 98 and another one running Windows XP. Both have an internet connection via a Lynksys router, but I want to share files and printers.
I ran the networking wizard and have both computers with sharing properties on both computers and it didn't work.
Does anyone know anything about this or know of a good place to get some info?
All of the forums that I found do not address my particular problem.

You have to change the username and password on the Windows 98 PC to the ExACt SaMe as what you use to log on to the XP machine.
Or...
You have to setup a user with sharing rights on the XP machine to MaTcH that of the Win 98 machine.
Either way, you will have to restart the Win 98 Machine

It has to do with user rights, and the answer is in the micoroshaft Tech-Net KB (just can't recall where)

Now that I think about it, I think I missed something...
You need to have both machines on either the same workgroup or domain (workgroup is simpler and easier)

by sharing rights to you mean printer and file sharing?
I did that, both are on the same workgroup. On the 98 machine (called FAMILY, when I click on network neighborhood, I can only see that computer (the 98 machine).
When I click on my network places on the XP machine, I can see both computers....it says that I do not have access to the 98 (FAMILY) machine.

Try this:
on the XP Machine you click on Start/My Network Places/ then choose setup an home or small office network. Follow the prompts in the setup wizard. Then at the end you will create a network setup disk on a 3.5" floppy. You will then take this floppy to the 98 machine and run the floppy on it. When finished you will be networked.

Have you turned on File and Printer Sharing on your windows 98 machine?

Hi Samporras, what you want to do is possible but all the right pieces of the networking puzzle need to be in the right places before it will work. Since you are using two operating systems it will be a little more difficult but still doable.

Try reading here for help with getting Networked, there are tutorials and troubleshooting articles to get most any system up and running.

Basically you need to have Microsoft File and Print Sharing installed. Then you need to setup "sharing" on each machine for the "pieces" you want to share.

See if you can find the instructions you need and if you run into trouble just shout.
