Register Globals How to turn it off

I am installing Zen Cart and it had alerted me that "Register Globals is ON" and it would be more secure to turn it off.
As I am a typical end user, I have NO IDEA where to change it, how to change, etc.
Can some one help me with a "detailed recepe"?
Thanks in advance

Thanks to both.
If you guys keep on helping me, I'll have to invite you for a consulting period in Brazil.

Bruce-
Do i need a special UNIX viewer for the .htaccess file? Do I just add it to the end? Which .htaccess file should I append to, the one in my directory under 'public-html' ?
Thanks , as I am trying to turn off mine too.

Same question - ready to edit the file but can't find it - thanks!
EDIT: disregard - found it via CPanel.
