I am also trying to set up an online product catalog (not selling yet) and I have been reading all forum messages and it looks half of you use oscommerce and the other half zencart.
"should I install Os Commerce or Zen cart?"
Can you guys tell me positive and negative points of each program?
THANKS A LOT
Sergio

Well,
Zen is an offshoot of osCommerce so basic functionality is the same. osCommerce has more contributions than Zen but the help at Zen far exceeds those at osc. I would look at Zen and see if it can do what you need it to. If so, get it. If not, look at osc and see. I have used osc on a few sites and played with Zen. Zen was easy to customize as was osc so that aspect shouldnt matter much.

It also seems that with Zen you get more frequent upgrades and revisions to the code. This is a positive thing in the sense that you have people actively tweaking the code on an ongoing basis. But it can be a negative from a maintenance/upkeep standpoint. Just depends on your outlook.
OsCommerce seems to have been stuck at 2.2 milestone 2 for almost as long as IE has been stuck at version 6. Having said that, I think that the OsCommerce folks are in the middle of a complete rebuild of the code and that the next major release will be very different (in coding terms) than version 2.2

Try Mals-e. Everybody who use it are very happy.
I myself going to use it.
